The Environment and Rural Development Foundation (ERuDeF) was conceived in 1996 as the Agriculture Sector and Environment Research Group (ASERG) with focus on Lebialem Division of South West Cameroon by a small team of professionals. After conducting and compiling a number of researches in this Division by 1998 and following from the conclusions of these field studies, the members of ASERG decided to move forward to form a broad base group that could handle the challenges identified in the field.

In 1999, a broad-based consultation for the formation of a broad-based organization was launched and in August 1999, a constituent general meeting that led to the creation of the Environment and Rural Development Foundation was held.
