UB Science Students Exposed To Biodiversity Conservation

Members of the University of Buea Faculty of Science Students Association (FSSA) were May 19, 2015 exposed to opportunities in the domain of biodiversity conservation at a forum it organised at the Dorothy Limunga Njeuma Amphi Theatre of the University of Buea. The one-day seminar was aimed at creating a platform for of interaction and information sharing between potential graduates and companies.

The Science students were encouraged to specialise in fields that are not yet exploited and less competitive like biodiversity conservation, agroforestry, NGO & fundraising studies, and environmental journalism offered by the pioneer and lone ERuDeF Institute of Biodiversity and Non-profit Studies (ERuDeF Institute) in Cameroon.

The ERuDeF Public Relations Officer, Ndimuh Bertrand Shancho, while presenting the programmes and activities of the organization, encouraged the University of Buea students to enrol into the Professional Masters Degree programme of the Institute to widen their scope of opportunities.

He called on these students to restrain from being certificate-focused to being skills-focused.

“When you will graduate and get into any company or organization to seek for a job, very few, or even no director, will ask you what certificate you have got. All they will ask you is what you can do for their organization, your certificate will only be secondary,” said Ndimuh.

Quizzed on available opportunities at ERuDeF, Ndimuh said that in order to consolidate and expand its programs nationwide, ERuDeF has launched a 10-year recruitment programme.

“Under this programme, 10 to 15 dynamic, ambitious and visionary candidates will be recruited to fill various positions within the organization,” the ERuDeF Public Relations Officer said.

To be part of this recruitment plan, he said holders of Bachelor’s Degree will have to go through a two-year professional induction training programme at the ERuDeF Institute, while holders of Masters Degree would have to undergo a 12-month professional induction training at the ERuDeF Institute.

The seminar brought together students from a cross-section of departments in the Faculty of Science at the University of Buea as well as companies and organizations like Biopharcam Sarl, IRAD Ekona, Desa Institute and Addax Cameroon, amongst others
